In mathematics we are often accustomed to asking a question, solving an equation, and getting the same results every time. In certain areas of mathematics or in research this is not always the case. We may get different results each time perform an experiment, collect data, or observe some phenomenon. A key question is whether the variations we experience are significant or are they just "noise."

Concepts of probability are the foundation of statistics. And statistics can be used to analyze data in a broad range of disciplines.

Actually statistics are used to help make the problem easier! Think how many times a single number—the average—is used to summarize perhaps thousands of data points.

Welcome to the world of probability and statistics!
