Path to CalculusSo you want to study calculus. Wonderful! Calculus unlocks the door to the riches of mathematical thought and enjoyment. However, you do need a good foundation in algebra and trigonometry. The easiest path, and may even be shorter if you end up struggling, is to take Precalculus first. Precalculus, MATH 121, does not apply to a Mathematics major or minor, but it can be useful to get you "up to speed" to begin Calculus I.
Most of the students at Southwestern Adventist University, even with good grades coming directly from four-years of mathematics at high school take this path.
The three credits of Precalculus apply to their elective options.
Some have stated later that they were glad they had taken Precalculus first because it was a good introduction to what was expected of a university mathematics student.
A few, who feel they have an excellent background, go directly to Calculus I, MATH 181.
