Sequences, Induction, and Probabilty

Blitzer, chapter 10

I advise my students to listen carefully the moment they decide to take no more mathematics courses. They might be able to hear the sound of closing doors.
James Caballero, Everybody a mathematician?, CAIP Quarterly 2 (Fall, 1989).

sections:

      10.1, 10.2, and 10.3

We shall cover only the sections on sequences and series.

objectives:

  • define what is meant by a sequence
  • distinguish between finite and infinite sequences
  • explain what is meant by the covergence of a sequence
  • determine a sequence when a recursion formula is used
  • define a factorial
  • use summation notation
  • define an arithmetic sequence
  • calculate useful values for an arithmetic sequence
  • define a geometric sequence
  • calculate useful values for a geometric sequence
  • define a series
  • explain what is meant by convergence of a series
  • find the sum of a finite geometric series
  • find the sum of an infinite geometric series
  • use series to solve problems
