Algebra is the study of real numbers.
Arithmetic deals directly with these numbers, but algebra tells us how to represent them symbolically
and then to manipulate the symbols by specific rules to solve problems that could not be approached simply by looking at the numbers directly.

College Algebra is similar in content to high school Algebra II building upon a foundation course in algebra.
However, because of the difference in schedule and format of a college course there is much more expected from the student than was found in a high school course.
It is possible to successfully complete College Algebra with only a high school background in Algebra I and Geometry; however, having completed an Algebra II course will aid considerably.
This is the reason that normally high school Algebra II is a strongly recommended prerequisite.

This course is designed to meet the needs of the Adult Degree Program and Distance Education students at Southwestern Adventist University.
The structure has been adapted for the distance education environment from an on-campus course.
The mathematics you will be studying is the same as and the assignments and tests are virtually identical to the grading opportunities students attending classes at Southwestern Adventist University find.
I wish you the best success as you study this material.
May you find this mathematics interesting and enjoyable!
If I can, as a teacher, help you in successfully completing the requirements and earning a great grade, then I am more than happy to work with you towards that end.
