Final Exam Summary

The Final Exam is a two-hour exam that is similar in format to the previous four chapter tests, just twice as long! It covers chapter 6 and chapter 7 as well being comprehensive over all the course material.

All homework must be submitted no later than the time you begin the test. If any assignments have not been previously submitted, then give them to your test proctor before you begin the test so that they may be included with the test paper in the return envelope.

A calculator is needed.

The Final Exam contains two roughly equal parts, although it will not necessarily be explicitly divided into two sections. The first is similar to the previous chapter tests and covers the last section of material; that is, chapters 6 and 7. The rest is comprehensive over the entire semester's material, including the last section.

Think of the semester being divided into five parts. The chapter tests cover the first four sections with questions over that specific material respectively with 100 points for each section. The final exam covers the last section in like manner (with 100 points), but then also covers the entire semester (with another 100 points or 20 points for each of the five sections).

The approximate balance of the final exam will thus be:

 chapter  120  points
 chapter  220
 chapter  320
 chapters 4 & 520
 chapters 6 & 7120
  200  total

With this balance each section of the material is covered uniformly between the section test and the final exam at the rate of 120 points.

Of course, since mathematics tends to build upon earlier concepts, the material of early chapters is essential to success in the rest of the material.

The format of the Final Exam is similar to the section tests. Point values are given for each problem. Space is provided with each problem to work out the answer. Budget your time. Partial credit will be awarded where appropriate and possible. Put something down for each problem, and show your work!

The best way to prepare is to:

  • listen to the class presentation and take notes
  • read all of the assigned material
  • ask your tutor or the teachers questions about things you do not understand
  • complete all assigned homework

  • review your graded assignments
  • use the list of objectives, especially chapter 6 and chapter 7, and the sample test questions, especially chapter 6 and chapter 7, to determine what is expected and to "test yourself"
  • use the odd numbered exercises in each section to check yourself
  • look at the practice tests at the end of each of the assigned chapters.

  • get a good night's rest
  • eat sufficient to be alert yet relaxed
  • bring writing implements (including an eraser) and a calculator
  • arrive on time!
