CALCULATOR COMPUTATIONS

The following keystrokes are those appropriate for the SHARP EL-502L. If you have this type of calculator, then you should try out the sequence. If you have another type, then it is suggested that you write out the appropriate keystrokes for your calculator. In any case, you should know how to use your calculator to evaluate the expressions on the left. The correct result is given on the right. You need to practice so that you can quickly and reliably compute these types of expressions.

The convention is to label the keys for the 2nd F according to what function you are actually using (the yellow label above the key) rather than the primary label (white on the key).

Numbers in scientific notation may be entered directly; that is, without using the key:

7.4x105 740000.0
3.45x10-4 0.000345
-2.7x103 -2700

Actual calculations:

64.00000
0.35356
4.1231
1.91293
1.7783
20.0855
0.01832
3.1623
0.0031623
0.77815
2.01490
1.46497

Also practice on the examples given in the text, the odd-problems with the answers provided, and some for which you can compute the answer without a calculator, eg. 53 = 125.
