Tall Jalul is located about 5 km (3 miles) due east of the town of Madaba. It is a "hill" about 250 m (800 ft) across and about 20 m (65 ft) above the surrounding rather flat plain. It is clearly visible from some distance in any direction.

The site was first excavated in 1992. During past seasons five fields had been opened and excavated identifying structures from the iron to persian ages (9th - 5th centuries BC or time of the kings and the divided kingdom of Judah and Isreal to the time of Esther).
The western part of the Tall is elevated above the rest. A modern cemetery is located on this raised "acropolis."
